Public education in Washington, D.C., is provided by District of Columbia Public Schools and a network of charter schools. D.C. Public Schools manages 175 campuses serving a total student enrollment of more than 60,000. Independent charter schools are authorized and monitored by the D.C. Public Charter School Board. The charter network includes dozens of campuses with a range of specialties, from pre-kindergarten to adult education.
Other local landmarks include the former homes of Dr. Ralph Bunche and poet Sterling Brown. Dr. Bunche a scholar and Nobel Peace Prize recipient who lived in Brookland in the 1940s. The home, still a private residence today, was designed by a reputable architect named Hilyard R. Robinson. Sterling Brown was a prominent figure and a long-time professor at Howard University. His former home on Kearney Street was designed by Lewis Giles, Sr.
